Nets Winner Against QPR
Nigeria’s Shola Ameobi beat Rob Green in the 81st minute to give Newcastle United a 1-0 win over QPR in wet and cold conditions at St James’ Park.
It was a crucial three points at home for the battling Magpies, but Harry Redknapp’s QPR continue to sit in a very dangerous position in the relegation zone.
It was a poor first half from both teams in the rainy conditions as neither side was able to create genuine scoring chances.
Morocco’s Adel Taarabt went closest for QPR when he fired in a shot from a tight angle straight at Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul.
Senegal striker Papiss Cisse should have made more of a one-on-one chance and Davide Santon put a shot wide of goal as the Magpies went in at the break to moans of discontent from the home support.
The moans became full-on boos early in the second half as Papiss Cisse was taken off after heading over the bar. He was visibly upset at the decision and refused to shake his manager’s hand when he came off the field.
Substitute Ameobi then had a chance to score on 66 minutes, but he could only get a slight touch on the ball and the effort drifted wide.
Then substitute Gabriel Obertan got down the left before crossing to Demba Ba, but his header was easy for Green to deal with.
But Newcastle went into the lead with 10 minutes left on the clock. Ameobi was found inside the danger area, he cut inside onto his left foot and bent an unstoppable shot past Green.
The lead could have been doubled soon after as Sylvain Marveaux powered in a low shot that Green did well to save.
